Autistic children toilet train later on average — and that's okay. Readiness matters more than age. Standard 3-day methods usually fail because they assume the child finds social praise reinforcing and tolerates interruption well. Here's the adapted approach BCBAs actually use.
Readiness signals (age is NOT one of them)
- Stays dry 1–2 hours at a time
- Shows awareness of being wet/soiled (pulling at diaper, moving away)
- Can sit (even briefly) on the toilet without distress
- Follows a 1–2 step routine with visual support
